The European Commission has launched a Call for Evidence to support the preparation of an update to the EU Arctic Policy, which is planned for adoption as a Joint Communication in Q3 2026.
The initiative does not create a new policy but aims to update the existing EU Arctic Policy, adopted in 2021, to ensure it remains fit for purpose in light of rapidly evolving environmental, geopolitical, economic and social developments in the Arctic. The Call for Evidence seeks inputs to inform the Commission’s understanding of key challenges and opportunities, including climate change impacts, environmental pressures, security dynamics and sustainable development in Arctic regions.
The scope of the initiative covers three main priorities: (1) climate change mitigation, adaptation and environmental protection; (2) sustainable and inclusive development, with particular attention to local and Indigenous communities; and (3) enhanced international cooperation, including on security and geopolitical issues. Science, research, innovation, connectivity and Indigenous Peoples’ rights are identified as cross-cutting themes. The Call for Evidence is open to everyone.
