The European Polar Board (EPB) is organizing a session at the Arctic Circle Rome Forum titled:

EUROPE’S POLAR RESEARCH

(Europe’s Path to Knowledge Security & Sustainability)

🗓 Tuesday, March 3 | 08:30 – 09:25 CET (new time)
📍 Biblioteca Sala A, Floor 0, CNR

As climate-driven changes in the Arctic and Antarctic continue to accelerate, their impacts are increasingly felt far beyond the polar regions and shape Europe’s climate patterns, influence ecosystems and economic sectors, and raise important questions for long-term preparedness and sustainability.

Bringing together national, EU, funding, and scientific perspectives, the discussion will explore how governance, funding continuity, and cooperation can ensure Europe remains prepared for the environmental and societal implications of polar change.

Speakers will address the role of long-term observing systems, strategic research infrastructure, and collaborative funding mechanisms, as well as the importance of strengthening cooperation between national and EU research actions. The conversation will also look ahead to future milestones, including the next International Polar Year, and how these moments can reinforce Europe’s commitment to sustained and interoperable polar research.

At a time when reliable, independent scientific knowledge is essential for informed decision-making, polar research remains a cornerstone of Europe’s broader sustainability and resilience agenda.
