The Antarctica InSync initiative has published its Science Plan, setting out the scientific priorities and coordination framework for a major international effort to synchronise multidisciplinary observations across Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Antarctica InSync aims to bring together researchers, observing systems, and infrastructures from around the world to improve understanding of rapid environmental change in the Antarctic region and its global consequences. The initiative addresses key topics including climate change, sea ice, ice-sheet dynamics, biodiversity, ocean processes, and human impacts. Antarctica InSync is an endorsed programme under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)

The European Polar Board (EPB) is following the development of Antarctica InSync closely. Several representatives from EPB Member organisations are contributing to the initiative through a range of scientific, advisory, and coordination roles, demonstrating the strong engagement of the European polar research community in this international initiative.

EPB is also pleased to note that its Executive Secretary, Dr. Maria Grigoratou, is among the co-authors of the Antarctica InSync Policy White Paper, which highlights the societal and policy relevance of Antarctic research and aims to strengthen links between science and decision-making.

As preparations continue towards implementation, Antarctica InSync represents an important contribution to international polar cooperation and will provide valuable foundations for ongoing and future initiatives, including the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the preparations for the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY-5, 2032-2033).
