Workshop: "Towards a synchronized Antarctic circumpolar moored ocean observatory"

Under the umbrella of SYNCHRONY and Antarctica InSync we would like to invite you to sign-up for a workshop: "Towards a synchronized Antarctic circumpolar moored ocean observatory". The workshop will be held online on 4 December 2026, 9:00-12:00 (CET).

We envision an informative get-together and seek representations of all existing and future ocean mooring observatories, to obtain a complete understanding of the various activities taking place around the continent, and to learn from each other's technical, logistical, and scientific experiences. All long-term observatories are welcome, anything generating time series under water from the deep Southern Ocean across the continental shelves to underneath ice shelves. For active contributions, we envision simple overviews of the respective ocean observing systems (where, how long, what, why etc.) and in addition addressing some points that can lead into discussions, along the lines of:

I CAN. Something specific your group can contribute in this space. An instrument, a technique, know-how, a dataset, a model, a method, field access, a piece of code, etc.

I CAN'T. A thing or "The thing" blocking your group’s ambitions. A measurement you cannot make, a place you can’t reach, a reliability you can’t achieve, a calibration nobody has done, etc.

The final agenda will depend on attendence and contributions, but for now we envision a 3 hour workshop incl. a 20 minute break.

Workshop goals include to:

inform each other on existing long-term activities around the Antarctic continent

identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities to collaborate

establish an international forum to exchange knowledge, ideas, logistics, data, technical and scientific expertise

help to work towards a synchronized circumpolar moored observing system
