Peter Sköld elected to European Polar Board Executive Committee

During the Autumn 2020 Plenary Meeting (15th and 16th October), Peter Sköld, Member Representative for ARCUM, Sweden, was elected to the EPB’s Executive Committee (EXCOM).

Peter Sköld is professor of history, Sami culture and society development at Umeå University, Sweden. He is  director at the Centre for Arctic Research (ARCUM), and former director of the Sami Research Centre. Sköld’s research profile includes Arctic sustainable development, historical demography, history of epidemics, indigenous health transitions and northern cultures. He was one of the authors of Arctic Human Development Report II. Peter Sköld has an active engagement in Arctic research planning, in stakeholder cooperation, and international collaboration. Sköld is chair of the Board of Governors of the University of the Arctic (UArctic), and former president of International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA), and past-chair of WG Human and Social Sciences in the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). He is also Swedish delegate of Arctic Council Culture, Economy and Geography Expert Group (SECEG), and Deputy Director of the Chinese-Nordic Arctic Research Centre (CNARC). In 2015 Peter Sköld was appointed Honorary Consul of Västerbotten to Latvia and in 2016 he was appointed official Climate Ambassador of Västerbotten. 2017-19 he was the Chair of the Joint Working Group on Education & Research (JWGER) in the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC). Sköld is the 2018-2020 director of the Arctic Five consortium.

Sköld joins existing EPB EXCOM members Kirsi Latola (EPB Chair, Thule Institute, Finland), Nicole Biebow (Helmholtz Association, Germany), Antonio Quesada (MINECO, Spain) and Vito Vitale (CNR, Italy).
