Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean (MEASO)

Date

09.04. – 13.04.2018

Location

Hobart, Australia

Description

Assessing Status and Trends of Habitats, Key Species and Ecosystems in the Southern Ocean
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
APRIL 9-13, 2018 |  HOBART, AUSTRALIA
A core activity of ICED (Integrating Climate and Ecosystem Dynamics in the Southern Ocean), a partner program of IMBER and SCAR.

Summary
The four Themes of the conference (more detail here) will facilitate contributions from the Antarctic and Southern Ocean marine science community to the 6th Assessment Review (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC), and recent initiatives to assess status and trends in global ocean ecosystems.

The Conference will also make a significant contribution to the development of Theme 6 Biology of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) and to updating the SCAR Report on Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE).

A Policy Forum (details here) will be held mid-week of the conference to bring together scientists, fishers, and marine policy makers to develop priorities for marine biological and ecological research over the next two to three decades. The aim is to target research that will deliver science-based advice to support stakeholders and policy-makers.

The outcomes of the Conference and Policy Forum are also expected to provide significant input to the Antarctic Treaty's Committee on Environment Protection (CEP), the Scientific Committee for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (SC-CAMLR), the International Whaling Commission’s Scientific Committee (SC-IWC) and other organisations interested in the management and conservation of Southern Ocean ecosystems.
